According to an NHRC statement, the rights body has issued notices to Andhra Pradesh DGP and SP, Guntur after taking suo-motu cognisance of a media report that B Suneela was pushed in front of a speeding lorry by hooligans when she tried to save her daughter from their clutches.
The victim, aged 45 years, and her daughter a BTech student were returning home after shopping around 09:00 PM on April 8, 2013 when a group of drunken men accosted them at Gandhi Chowk, Tenali in Guntur district.
When one of them tried to grope the girl, her mother pushed him away. Thereafter, the hooligans turned towards the mother and pushed her in front of a speeding lorry. She was rushed to the NRI General Hospital in the nearby Mangalagiri town, but she died on the way, the statement said.
The commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of dignity of women as well as their safety at public places.
