Bhind (Madhya Pradesh), April 24: A Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday taunted women by saying that it is the latter's indulgence which leads to their harassment by men. He said: "Jab tak koi mahila tedhi nazar se hasegi nahi tab tak koi aadmi usse chhedega nahi" (No man will harass a woman unless led on by her).

The leader, Satyadev Katare, who also happens to be the Congress general secretary in the state, said this while addressing a gathering to garner support for the party for the assembly elections scheduled later this year. What shocked all more was that the state Congress chief Kantilal Bhuria and Opposition leader Ajay Singh were listening silently as Katare made the shocking remark.

Katare remarks came in the wake of the rape of a four-year-old girl in a village in the state who is currently fighting for life. She is in coma after suffering severe brain injuries. The alleged rapist was arrested from Bihar on Tuesday.

Madhya Pradesh reported more than 3,400 rapes in 2011, the highest in the country. The state came to the headlines for wrong reasons reason following rape of two foreigners.

However, the latest remark by the Congress leader could prove to be antitheisis to the concern the party president, Sonia Gandhi, has been showing to curb crime against women. The UPA government at the Centre is under tremendous pressure for failing to check crime against women, particularly in the national capital where two horrible instances of rape and human rights violation in the recent past sparked off a massive furore.
