Justifying the action of burning phones, authorities said that students were browsing inappropriate data. Besides, they also found that many were 'wasting time' on social networking sites'.
"The decision was a considered one, taken after it was noted that students were browsing anti-religion websites and immoral stuff," Maulana Kari Habeeb head of Madrasa Jama Arabia Hathaura was quoted as saying.
According to the authorities they do not object to the use of 'simple phones'.
Students have now been warned of serious conequences if they are found using multi-media phones. Authorities have said that they will be expelled from the institution if found in possession of multi-media phones.
In order to ensure that students take this warning seriously, a bonfire was lit and all the multi-media phones were burnt. Around 2,300 students are registered in the madrasa.
