He asked the people to stay indoors with their doors locked and not to open their doors to anyone except a police officers - in "all of Boston".

How the drama began

The drama began late Thursday (US local time) with the robbery of a 7/11 convenience store. This was after the FBI released images of two suspects.

Soon after, in Cambridge, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was fatally shot while he sat in his car. The police believe the bombing suspects were responsible for the shooting.

The brothers then hijacked a Mercedes car at gunpoint in Cambridge. They released the driver a half-hour later. As police picked up the chase, they threw explosives and shot at officers.

The officers fired back, wounding Tamerlan. He died at Beth Israel Hospital. He had bullet wounds and injuries from an explosion, according to officials. Dzhokhar apparently escaped on foot.

Who are the terror siblings?

According to the Russian social networking site Vkontakte, Tsarnaev Tamerlan graduated from the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, a Massachusetts high school two years agao. He had schooling in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, from 1999 to 2001.

He was a good student as he received a $2,500 scholarship in 2011 to pursue college. He was also named a wrestling all-star at his high school the same year. He wanted to become a engineer.

A posting on a social media site in his name included the comments: "I don't have a single American friend. I don't understand them."

Tsarnaev wrote he considers "career and money" most important in life. As his worldview, he wrote: "Islam".

He knew English, Russian and Chechen, and affiliated to groups devoted to Chechnya.

Tsarnaev was born on 22 July 1993, just before a fierce battle for independence broke out in the republic of Chechnya. Over time, the independence movement grew increasingly Islamist in character.

Tsarnaev follows several pages devoted to Islam. He also lists one of his favorite songs as Hey Sexy Lady"by Shaggy. But Tamerlan seemed anti-American and did not like Thanksgiving.
