Delhi gangrape accused caught lying?

Delhi Gangrape
New Delhi, April 18: A special fast-track court which is hearing the case of the December 16 gangrape has ruled out the possibility of accused Vinay Sharma being assaulted in Jail.

Although, the accused had claimed that he had been beaten up by fellow inmates at Tihar Jail, the court has said that the CCTV footage does not substantiate the claim.

"I have examined the CCTV footage provided by the Tihar jail superintendent on allegation of beating made by accused Vinay Sharma. No such alleged incident is seen in the said CCTV footage," Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna said.

On April 5, Vinay had appeared before the court with his righthand in a cast and had pleaded that he should not be sent back to Tihar. The accused claimed that he was being ill-treated in Tihar Jail.

A lawyer representing one of the accused in the December 16 gangrape case was on Tuesday warned about repeated failure to appear in the proceedings by a special court on Wednesday. The court enquired from Mukesh if he wanted to have a counsel from a legal aid, but he refused.

The Delhi gang-rape victim died in a Singapore hospital after fighting for her life for13 days. The incident shocked the whole nation, as citizens across the country came out on the streets to protest against crime against women. Initially, five accused in the case were facing trial for allegedly gang-raping and assaulting the woman, who died in a Singapore hospital on December 29. With the proceedings against the main accused Ram Singh having abated after his death on March 11, the remaining four adult accused - Mukesh, Vinay, Akshay Singh and Pawan - are facing trial in the case for rape and murder of the woman. The sixth accused in the case is a juvenile who is facing trial before the Juvenile Justice Board in Delhi.
