Allahabad HC scraps district status of Amethi

Lucknow, April 15: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Monday scrapped the district status of Amethi is and said the decision to create Amethi as a separate district was illegal. The court gave its ruling in favour of a public interest litigation (PIL) which was filed challenging the district status of Amethi.

Amethi is the political constituency of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

Former Chief Minister Mayawati had carved out the new district of Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj in July 2010 by borrowing three assembly seats from Rae Bareli and two from Sultanpur. The district was renamed Amethi after the Samajwadi Party took over early last year.

At the time of carving out the district, the census process was underway and creation of new districts was prohibited. The PIL was subsequently filed.

On Friday, the ruling SP had withdrawn the VIP status from the Gandhi family bases of Amethi and Rae Bareli.
