The accused P Ganesh, a first year B Tech student and the girl has eloped from their homes to get married which was against their parent's wishes. The girl later claimed that Ganesh tried to rape her initially in a lonely spot after she refused to give in to his sexual advances. When she tried to escape, Ganesh threw acid on her.
According to police sources, the boy had come prepared with the chemical.
The girl was rescued by people in the area and was given shelter. She later reported the matter to her parents who filed a complaint against Ganesh.
The accused is on the run. The girl is undergoing medical examinations at King Geroge Hospital. Police are investigating the case.
A similar incident took place in Chennai on January 30 where 21 year old J Vidya's lover Vijaya Bhaskar threw a bottle of acid at her, burning her back. When she tried covering her face, Bhaskar got angry and rubbed acid against her face. He then locked the door and fled. She later succumbed to the injuries.
Recently, when the Anti- Rape bill was being amended, there were suggestions that punishment for acid attacks should be harsher and include life imprisonment. However, with only 62 members in the Lok Sabha for the proposal (105 members voted against the proposal) the bill gives a maximum of 10 years imprisonment to the accused.
