UCL: Ferguson fined, Nani suspended by UEFA

London, Mar 23: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been fined £8,500 by UEFA for failing to appear at the post media conference following the Champions League loss to Real Madrid, while winger Nani has been banned for one match for his red card in the game.

Referee Cuneyt Cakir came under scrutiny for the controversial dismissal of Nani for a his tackle Alvaro Arbeloa as United crashed out of the Champions League losing 2-1 at Old Trafford.

"Manchester United FC midfield player Nani has been suspended for one match by UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body, following the red card he received at the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Real Madrid CF at Old Trafford on 5 March," a statement from UEFA said.

"Manchester United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson has been fined 10,000 [euros] for non-fulfilment of the post-match media obligations at the same match."

United were total control of the game leading 1-0 until the sending off of Nani while Ferguson failed speak to the media after the game. United assistant manager Mike Phelan later said that Ferguson was too 'distraught' to face the media.

Ferguson said it was third time that United had been knocked out of Europe due to poor decisions by the referee.
