Rakhi Sawant
Mumbai, March 23: Sanjay Dutt must be overwhelmed with Bollywood item girl Rakhi Sawant's offer according to which she would volunteer to go to jail on behalf of Dutt.

Reacting against the Supreme Court's sentence against Dutt in connection with Bombay Blasts 1993, Sawant on Saturday, March 23 claimed that being a single woman it would not create any trouble for her if she spend coming years behind bar as it would create for the family man Dutt.

Lamenting for Dutt, Sawant, who is also known as a drama queen of Bollywood, asserted that she didn't mind doing a good deed to give Dutt his freedom.

Sawant is the latest entrant into the group who have demanding pardon for Dutt as they believe that the actor has already suffered a lot over the 20-year-old case.

Veteran Bollywood actress Jaya Bachchan, who is also a Samajwadi Party MP, on Friday claimed, "I agree with everyone that he has suffered a lot. I believe that he should not be given such a big punishment."

"He is a changed man now. I'm going to personally appeal governor and ask him to pardon him," said Mrs Bachchan while commenting on the Supreme Court's verdict on Dutt who now wold be sent back to jail.

Mrs Bachchan is not alone who believes that Dutt should be pardoned as he had suffered a lot over the last twenty years. Markandey Katju, the Chairman of Press Council of India, also appealed to Maharashtra Governor K Sankarnarayanan to pardon the actor.

Katju on Thursday sent a letter seeking pardon for Dutt under Article 161 of the Constitution saying that he had not been found guilty of having played a role in the 1993 blasts and had suffered a lot.

Katju said the apex court, having found that Sanjay Dutt had in his possession a prohibited weapon without a licence, awarded him the minimum imprisonment which was prescribed under law.

"Section 25 (1(A) of the Arms Act states that if a person has in his possession a prohibited weapon without a licence, he shall be awarded punishment of not less than 5 years imprisonment and not more than 10 years," Katju said.

The power of pardon under Article 161 by the Constitution is different from judicial power as the Governor or the President can grant pardon or reduce the sentence of the court even if a minimum is prescribed, added Katju.

"Hence, there is no doubt that the Governor can grant pardon/reduce the sentence. For example, in the case of Commander Nanavati who was held guilty of murder, the Governor gave him pardon although the minimum sentence for murder is life sentence," Katju said.

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld TADA Court's sentence and asked Dutt to surrender before Bombay Court within one month. However, the court reduced the jail term from six years to five years. Hence, the Bollywood actor, who already spent 18 months in jail, has to spent three and half years behind the bar.
