Mumbai, March 21: Thursday, March 21, 2013 brought bad news for Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt. The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the conviction of actor Sanjay Dutt under the Arms Act in connection with the 1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts case.

The apex court has sentenced five years jail term for the 53-year-old actor. Bollywood fraternity expressed shock and grief after the verdict.

Even his sister and Congress MP was "emotional" after hearing the verdict. "I just don't want to say anything," she told the media persons, waiting outside the Supreme Court.

The actor, the son of veteran film stars, Sunil Dutt and Nargis is no new to the world of crime.

It was way back in February 1982 when Dutt was arrested for the first time with 357 grams of cocaine. He was sentenced to 17 months of imprisonment. He served five months in prison and was later released on bail.

However, the actor's life took a complete turn when he was arrested on April 19, 1993, under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) for illegal possession of weapons.

Earlier, a TADA court had given six years jail term to Dutt under Arms Act. The 53-year-old actor has spent 18 months in jail and was granted bail by Supreme Court in October 1995. Since, he has already spent 18 months in jail, now he has to serve three and half-years in prison.

However, his tryst with prison continued and in 2006 the case opened for sentencing for all accused in the 1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts case.

The period of 2006-2008 saw Dutt spend a total of 7 months in different jail. In 2006 Dutt was finally acquitted of any TADA related offenses but was charged under the illegal possession of arms act. He was granted bail in the arms case in November 2007.
