Bizarre defence of Khurshid
Verma had once sided with his colleague Salman Khurshid after the latter was accused of being involved in corrupt activities related to siphoning off funds meant for the physically challenged people. He said the amount involved in the corruption (Rs 71 lakh) was too small to allure a central minister (Khurshid was then the law minister) to indulge in corruption. According to Verma, had the allegations pointed at a scam involving Rs 71 crore, then he would have been convinced.
Baap of Narendra Modi
Last month, the same Verma had said that he was the father of the heavyweight BJP leader when it came to electoral politics. He said this when asked about the Gujarat chief minister's prospects of contesting the polls from Uttar Pradesh. Verma, a die-hard Rahul Gandhi fan like man y of his colleagues, had also said that Modi would have to forfeit his deposit if wanted to contest from UP.
Other controversial statements
Last year in August, the minister had said that he was happy with the price rise for the farmers were benefitting because of this since the price of vegetables and other agro-products had gone up.
On December 13 last year, the 11th anniversary of the terror attack on the Indian Parliament, Verma said that he did not want Afzal Guru, the convict in the attack, to be hanged but given a life sentence. His comment came when the UPA government was dealing with the sensitive issue with lot of caution.
So when this 72-year-old politician launches a fresh attack on anybody else, there is little doubt that it would only lead to more controversy. But the real harm is being inflicted on the Congress because of these remorseless motormouths.
We have already seen how Sushilkumar Shinde gave a self-goal after accusing the BJP and RSS of conducting terror camps. And now with Verma accusing the Samajwadi Party chief of keeping links with terrorists, it will be be another embarrassment for 10 Janpath and 7 Race Course Road, for the SP has been a close ally of the UPA, both in its first and second terms and saved its day in the office when other allies pulled out.
It is shocking how some sychophants do their own party and beloved family more harm by indulging in non-sense talking. It is not surprising that senior Congress leaders like Janardhan Dwivedi and Kamal Nath later made amends by pulling up Verma and expressing regret, respectively.
These charges and the strategic handling by the Congress show its moral degeneration
The Congress revealed once again its hollow politics which is based solely on strategies and does not have any substance. It did not rein in Shinde when he accused the opposition without producing any evidence but now was forced to take a call on Veni for he had put its interest in peril. What will be its reaction if another loyalist, in an attempt to woo his or her political masters, accuse Mamata Banerjee or M Karunanidhi to be keeping links with any terror outfit?
The way the 128-year-old party has seen itself deteriorating, to say its shocking will be an understatement.
