Rape convict-Conman: Media in love with dual life of Bitti?

Jaipur, March 16: Who is Bitti Mohanty? The rape convict or conman, whose story has baffled the whole country? And, it is the story of Bitti which media is lapping up like a hot cake. The story has got all the ingredients of a Bollywood potboiler.

The son of a top ranking police official, who raped a German tourist in Alwar in 2006 and jumped parole, on the pretext that his mother was unwell. For more than six years he was absconding. Finally when he was arrested he was not Bitti, but Raghav Rajan, a bank official.

Police were left shell shocked, as how Bitti could erase all his past identities and live the life of a decent bank official? Bitti in collusion with his father, the former DGP of Odisha BB Mohanty procured fake school and college certificates and managed to get an MBA degree from Kerala. He also cleared his bank exam and was working with State Bank of Travancore.

But, finally his luck ran out and it was an anonymous letter from his jilted lover which helped police to arrest him. Even after his arrest he maintained that he is Raghav Rajan, a Telugite from Andhra Pradesh, who used to speak Malayalam.

A team of Rajasthan Police which had earlier arrested Bitti in Alwar in March 2006 did not take long to confirm his "real identity". The police official Hemender Singh, who had arrested Bitti identified him in Kerala on the basis of a scar on one of his legs. Rajasthan police team which had earlier taken him to Alwar and Jaipur from Kerala for investigation will bring him back to Kerala today.

A team of Kerala police visited Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to connect the missing link which helped Bitti to impersonate as Raghav. Investigations of Kerala police in Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh revealed some interesting facts about the case. The police team told media that Bitti stayed in Puttaparthi from 2007-2009.

Police sources say Bitti worked as computer operator in Sri Vidya College, 15 km away Puttaparthi in Kothacheruvu mandal headquarters. Later, he joined as a teacher at Deena Janodharan organsiation as a computer teacher.

In 2009, Bitti left Puttaparthi and did not return.

Police interaction with one Rama Rao, the headmaster of Deena Janoddharana Residential Hostel, a home for orphan children revealed chilling details about the case.

One more police team visited Odisha. They visited educational institutes where Bitti studied. At Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, where Bitti finished B.Tech in 2004, and Cuttack's Stewart School and Christ College revealed police that all his certificates are forged.

The police team's leader, Jose Joseph, said: "The B.Tech certificate in the name of Raghav Rajan is forged. A certificate with the same number was issued in the name of Bitti Mohanty."

At the Stewart School, principal Asha Das told the Press Trust of India: "We did not have any student by the name of Raghav Rajan. The index number and other details in Raghav Rajan's certificates had been issued to Bitti Mohanty." The Kerala police said certificates obtained from Christ College in name of Raghav Rajan too were forged.

On Friday, police conducted a finger print test which verified that Raghav Rajan is none-other-than Bitti Mohanty.. Jaipur police commissioner B L Soni confirmed that a five-member team of Kerala Police matched his finger prints in Jaipur jail today. "The team collected evidence and matched his finger prints which verified that the person in their custody is Bitti Mohanty," Soni said.

Enough has been said and written about Bitti Mohanty. Now, time to put the rape convict behind bars and punish him for all his offences, including rape and impersonation.
