Shocker for Sonia: Rajiv Gandhi's killer gets Gold Medal!
Perarivalan is one of the persons who have challenged death penalty in connection with Rajiv Gandhi's assassination case.
Perarivalan, who is currently lodged in Vellore Central Prision, was awarded capital punishment in 1991. However, Perarivalan along with two other convicts - Murugan and Santhan - had challenged the rejection of their mercy petitions by the President of India. The cases are currently pending in the Supreme Court.
An official release from Vellore Central Jail in Chennai on Thursday, March 14 says that Perarivalan "has come first and bagged the gold medal" in Diploma in Desk Top Publishing Operator course.
The training programmes were conducted in association with the Mahatma Gandhi Community College and the Tamil Nadu Open university.
175 out of the 185 prison inmates, who had appeared for various courses, passed the exams conducted in Jan 2012, informed the release.
Stating about the necessity of such training programmes, the release said, "It would improve the employment and self-employment opportunities for prisoners towards rehabilitation."
