The jail authorities in their official statement mentioned that Ram Singh, the main accused of infamous Delhi gang-rape case, has been found hanging inside cell no. 3 at 5:00 am.
Initial reports suggested that Ram Singh committed suicide. However, his lawyer and family members overruled such reports asserting that it was a case of murder.
VK Anand, Ram Singh's lawyer, said, "The accused were upset over public sentiments initially but no point were they suicidal."
According to Mr Anand, Ram Singh was happy over the progress of the court trials and he used to meet his family members on daily basis. The lawyer also demanded an investigation by CBI to verify the real facts what had happened inside the Tihar jail.
Ram Singh's family members claimed that Ram Singh had complained of being tortured in prison. Supporting Mr Ananda's demand, they too sought for a CBI enquiry to determine how he died.
Meanwhile, reports surfaced saying Ram Singh had played badminton with his cellmates. An official of the jail was quoted as saying, "Ram Singh's three cell mates have revealed that he told them a few times since Saturday that he and his brother will certainly get a death term for their role in the rape case. Singh had felt his family would be finished, according to his cellmates."
Ram Singh's alleged suicide raised questions on security inside the prison. Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde already claimed, "It is a major lapse in security, certainly it is not a small incident. Action will be taken."
After ordering a magisterial investigation into the case, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, "Whatever happened was wrong. When the inquiry report comes up, appropriate action will be taken."
Now, it seems that Tihar jail officials may face stern actions if the autopsy report of Ram Singh indeed shows that it was not suicide but a murder case.
