Jammu & Kashmir police nab rape accused who fled in chopper
On Mar 7, the accused was hospitalised as he had sustained an injury. The next day, several persons were hurt when their bus met with a mishap. They were all rushed to the same hospital. Since some of them were severely injured, the doctors referred the victims to another hospital in Jammu.
While these people were being put on a government helicopter, the accused boarded it taking advantage of the confusion at that time. Not only did he manage to escape by this ingenious method, he also duped the authorities by pretending to be one of the victims. They even paid him Rs 5000 as compensation.
The accused disappeared soon after the chopper, that is often used to ferry dignitaries such as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, landed in Jammu.
Belatedly realising that they had been completely conned by the accused, the police launched a manhunt. However, they could not find any trace of him for more than 48 hours. At last, he landed in their net on Monday.
The man was arrested initially on charges of raping a girl in Rajouri district. She complained that he sexually assaulted her at a jungle in Manja Kote.
Incidentally, the news of the alleged rapist escaping in a VVIP helicopter came on the very day that the main accused in the Delhi gangrape case committed suicide at the Tihar Jail in Delhi.
Ram Singh, driver of the luxury bus in which a 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally attacked by five men and a minor, hanged himself at his cell in Jail No 3.
The student is now known throughout the world as "Nirbhaya" (fearless) as she demanded stringent punishment for her rapists while battling for life at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
