New Delhi, March 8: BSP chief Mayawati on Friday attacked the UP government over the poor law and order situation in the state and said those who are responsible for the killing of deputy superintendent of police Zia-ul-Haq must be brought to law.

Speaking to the media outside the Parliament, the BSP leader said the CBI was working on the case and action would be taken as early as possible.

She said the Samajwadi Party (SP) government has failed in every aspect even before a year has passed since it came to power. She said the state was seeing no development and the law and order situation was bad, adding that SP goons were ruling the state at the moment.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mayawati had accused the state government of shielding Raja Bhaiya, the former state minister who has been charged in the murder of the police officer. She said Raja Bhaiya would have been arrested by now.

The CBI on Thursday named Raja Bhaiya as an accused in the murder of Haq. It booked the former minister on the basis of a complaint lodged by Haq's widow Parveen Azad. The investigative agency, which took charge of the case on Wednesday, began its probe into the killing of Haq and village headman Nanhe Yadav and his brother Suresh on Friday.

Haq, who was posted as the Circle officer at Kunda town, was killed after he went to probe the murder of the Yadavs over a land dispute. The state government suspended eight policemen, including the inspector at Kanda police station, for running away from the spot when Haq was attacked.

Post-mortem report said that Haq was severely beaten up before being shot dead.
