Acid Attack
Chennai, Feb 25: In a span of less than two weeks, the city has witnessed the death of two victims of acid attack. 21 year old J Vidya, who was battling for the last 25 days succumbed to injuries at Government Kilpauk Hospital on Sunday.

Vidya was working in an internet browsing centre. On January 30 during lunch time, her lover Vijaya Bhaskar threw a bottle of acid at her, burning her back. When she tried covering her face, Bhaskar got angry and rubbed acid against her face. He then locked the door and fled.

Some neighbours who came to the rescue after hearing her cries immediately rushed her to a private hospital. She had been in a critical condition.

According to the doctors she did not respond to the treatment. "This was a stage where a patient would be prone to bacterial infection. It is a known complication, as she was in the third week of her treatment. It needn't be because of external conditions but could also be attributed to poor intake, though she was on IV," Dr Jaganmohan, Professor and Head of the Department, Burns and Plastic Surgery, KMCH, was quoted saying.

Vidya had lost her father when she was 7 years old. Her mother Saraswathi works as domestic help.

According to reports, Vijaya Bhaskar had wanted to marry Vidya and approached Saraswathi. However, Saraswathi had said that it would be possible only with his parents approval. Although Bhaskar's parents had agreed to it, they said it would be possible only after his sister's wedding. He was told to avoid meeting Vidya during this time.
