Srinagar, Feb 15: The Hurriyat Conference (G) on Friday extended the general strike called to protest the execution of Afzal Guru, convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack case, by another couple of days. Sources in the outfit said there will be no strike on February 18.

The Hurriyat Conference (G) had called a three-day strike on February 9, the day when Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail in New Delhi. The Hurriyat (M) and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front had also called a four-day strike on the day. Later, Hurriyat (G) led by Syed Ali Geelani extended the strike by another four days till Friday. Now, it has decided to add another two days to its programme of protest.

Confirming the extension of ethe shutdown, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat general secretary Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai further said that people could not offer Jinaza in absentia of Guru owing to "high handedness of police" and it showed that the authorities were using force against people. He said the common people were not even allowed to carry out religious rites.

He said that they would continue to demand the return of Guru's body for it was the right of his family. Guru was buried in the jail premises after being hanged while his family was not informed about the execution beforehand. A letter informing about Guru's hanging was dispatched through speed post and it had reached the destination two days after the execution took place.
