According to media reports, there were loud explosions which were heard in the mountainous Russian region in the morning along with brightly burning rocks which could be seen several hundreds of kilometres.
These were identified as possible meteorites which were falling from the sky.
According to an emergency official, a meteorite exploded above the Chelyabinsk region (of the Urals). At several places the windows were blown away due to the shock waves.
"It was definitely not a plane. We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far," said the officer.
According to witnesses, a huge blast was heard during early morning and a shock wave was felt in a 19-storey building in the town center.
Occurrences like 'shaking ground, windows being shattered and car alarms being set off during the shower' were also reported.
The Russian Interior Ministry has confirmed that more than 400 people have been hurt in the meteorite fall.
