Kolkata, Feb 15: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had often claimed in the past that her government would probe each and every case of accusation filed against the previous Left Front government and punish the guilty. How far has that promise been fulfilled.

Here is an example. According to a report published in Bengali daily Anandabazaar Patrika on Friday, Banerjee had ordered a probe into the alleged financial corruption in the functioning of the state Aids prevention and control organisation during the previous government and after a year-long investigation, the probe panel submitted its final report in October last year. But none of the 38 recommendations made by the panel were executed in four months and now, the state department officials are saying that the probe report file has gone missing!

According to the report, funds worth few crores were embezzled in four years between 2007 and 2011 and it advised the government to conduct high-profile probe against Left leaders and administrative officials who are allegedly involved in the corruption. The current Leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra's name also featured in the report, the newspaper article said.

Question is being raised in several quarters about the Mamata government's reluctance in taking the necessary steps. It is not even showing enough intent to recover the lost file. Sources said that the alleged involvement of top administrative officials has put pressure on the state government against making a move.

Chief secretary Sanjay Mitra said he did not know anything about the file while a top health officials said nobody knows about the misplaced file. "May be the situation now is not right for publishing the file. It might be revealed at the appropriate time," the newspaper quoted the official saying. Health secretary Satish Tiwari said in the beginning that he did not know anything but later said the report is being studied but it was taking time for it is a big and complicated one.

When asked about the allegation, Mishra snubbed the state government, saying the latter had started the probe in a whimsical manner. "Let them conduct more such probe. Who is stopping them? We aren't bothered," the report quoted him.

Politics is a difficult game for those in power. It seems.
