Madrid, Feb 14: Plenty of action at the Bernabeu between Real Madrid and Manchester United but it ended with two spectacular headers. United have the edge over Madrid ahead of their second leg clash at Old Trafford.

Player ratings for Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester United: 


Diego Lopez - 7/10: Was caught offguard several times but got crucial touches to deny Robin van Persie. Couldn't stop the opening goal but had fine night i front of goal.

Alvaro Arbeloa - 6/10: His only job was to watch out for Danny Welbeck's run through the left flank.

Raphael Varane - 7/10: escaped a red card for a trip on Patrice Evra late in the game but was a dominant force at the back, winning headers, blocking shots and even good in attacking positions.

Sergio Ramos - 7/10: Was completed beaten in the air by Welbeck for the goal. Ramos made crucial blocks and denied Welbeck when clear on goal but had a difficult time facing Robin van Persie.

Fabio Coentrao - 7/10: Good at attacking positions, could have scored the opening goal and another but did a good job at the back as well.

Xabi Alonso - 7/10: Known for his long diagonal passes which he did with utmost ease but the highlight of the game was his goal-line clearance to deny Robin van Persie.

Sami Khedira - 6/10: Kept Madrid moving forward and also had few chances himself. A driving force in midfield creating chances for the attackers.

Angel di Maria - 8/10: Provided assist for Ronaldo's goal and had two great shots to test De Gea. Real's best player in the attacking third.

Mesut Ozil - 8/10: Playmaker for Real in the entire game. His trickery and clever movement near the penalty area caused problems for United's back line.

Crisitano Ronaldo - 8/10: The equaliser was sensational but he should have styed on the flanks instead of wasting time upfront.

Karim Benzema - 6/10: Did not have much to do upfront and created less chances for himself or his side.

Gonzalo Higuan and Luka Modric had put their crosses in for Ronaldo but had less time to make an impact.


David de Gea - 9/10: Man of the match for his brilliant saves. The Spaniard faced his biggest challenge with ease and confidence. But will have to work on clearing set pieces.

Rafael - 6/10: Had a torrid time taking on Ronaldo and failed to attack on the right hand side.

Rio Ferdinand - 7/10: Typical performance from the centre-back. Reading through balls and runs made by Ozil and Ronaldo.

Jonny Evans - 7/10: Had a huge task to replace Nemanja Vidic but was strong with tackles and kept United's defence toght throughout the game.

Patrice Evra - 6/10: Played in his usual style flying down the left flank but did not have any meaningful impact while attacking. Was completely beaten by Ronaldo for the goal.

Phil Jones - 8/10: Playing the holding role for United wasn't easy with Ronaldo, Ozil and Di Maria in the opposition but Jones was sharp and precise in marking Ronaldo.

Michael Carrick - 7/10: Wasn't able to release United on break but helped the back-line to clear threats.

Shinji Kagawa - 5/10: Did not have the physical presence to challenge to get passed Alonso, Ramos and Varane.

Wayne Rooney - 6/10: Not one of his best games but he did manage to block Ronaldo. He provided the corner for Welbeck's goal.

Danny Welbeck - 8/10: His pace and energy put Madrid's defenders under pressure, and apart from the opening goal, his lacked the finshing ability.

Robin van Persie - 6/10: Did not make any impact until the dying stages of the game when he missed two glorious chances.

Ryan Giggs, Antonio Valencia and Anderson came on as substitutes but could not make any difference.
