New Delhi, Feb 9: The BJP, which has been the most vocal to demand the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, a Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist, was taken aback by the sudden execution of the man in Tihar Jail on Saturday. However, welcoming the decision, its leaders said it was a delayed decision.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Der aye, durust aye" (It's better to be late than never). The same was said by another party leader Smriti Irani.

Rajiv Pratap Rudy said they welcomed the decision, even though it was a delayed one. He said the people of the country were waiting for it for a long time.

Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the action will send a strong message to all terrorists. He said the UPA government carried out the execution under pressure from the people.

Najma Heptulla, a senior BJP leader who survived the attack, said it didn't matter which caste or creed the terrorists belonged to. It was important that they were punished.

Meanwhile, 26/11 prosecutor Ujwal Nikam defended the delay in executing the decision, saying it was inevitable as the President had to consult with the council of ministers.

Supercop-turned-activist Kiran Bedi tweeted: "Afzal Guru hanged. Law finally turned FULL circle!"
