New software of Nudi to bring Kannada to mobile devices
This version has 11 Kannada fonts conforming to the Unicode style. It will be released by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Mukhyamantri Chandru on Tuesday.
The important advantage of Nudi 5.0 over its earlier versions was in terms of convenience and compatibility with mobile phones. It would also possible to convert any of the old Kannada fonts into Unicode system this version. The new software had been developed mainly to help implementation of Kannada in governance, Chandru says. The new software would be available for free download after the launch from http://www.karunadu.gov.in/pages/nudi.aspx.
The KDA will also be releasing a book Desi Maathu, which is a compilation of speeches made by various participants at a programme organised by the KDA to preserve the distinct native flavour of Kannada.
According to Chandru, Kannada had a distinct native flavour as the accent and the manner in which it was spoken varied from region to region. The KDA was trying to preserve this with its programme nudi sogadu.
To promote the language, Shettar would distribute scholarships worth Rs. 17.74 lakh to 94 students from below poverty line families pursuing master degrees in Kannada in seven universities located outside Karnataka.
