Manchester, Jan 14: Manchester United continued to be on top of the table after a tricky test against Liverpool which ended 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Robin van Persie continued his impressive run this season scoring a close-range shot put United ahead in the first half. United dominated most of the first period but their lead was doubled through Nemanja Vidic 10 minutes into the second half.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers brought in Daniel Sturridge for the second half and he narrowed United's lead just before the hour mark. The Red Devils held on as Liverpool pressed forward trying to clinch the equaliser. Sturridge was put through by Suarez late on but the former Chelsea striker smashed his shot to the stands.

Man United dominate but City stay close

Pre-match hype was surrounded between Luis Suarez and Van Persie, but the Dutchman was remarkable once again, scoring one and turning provider for the next. Van Persie, along with striker Danny Welbeck could have easily scored more during the opening phases of the game.

The old rivalry remains but Liverpool are nowhere close to United on the table, 24 points below at eighth place.

Elsewhere, Manchester City maintained a seven-point gap at second place after beating Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

City triumphed at Arsenal after 38 years as the Gunners were left with 10-man for most of the match. Referee Mike Dean sent-off defender Laurent Koscielny for holding Edin Dzeko in the penalty area but the Bosnian's strike was saved by Wojciech Szczesny.

City took the lead through James Milner in the 21st minute and it was doubled by Dzeko after 10 minutes. Arsenal had no control of the ball but were lucky not to concede more.

The game continued to go in City's favour as Arsenal had zero forward movements. Jack Wilshere tried his best to steer Arsenal forward but couldn't penetrate City's tight defence.

City too were reduced to 10-men after skipper Vincent Kompany lashed onto Wilshere, which looked like a two-footed challenge.

Arsenal remain in 6th place after Spurs and Everton dropped points on staurday.
