The £24 million signing of Dutch striker Robin van Persie has been truly worth it and is currently the difference between the Manchester giants as United sit on top of the league seven-points clear of second-place City.
Many questioned the amount of money being paid for a 29-year-old but that did not stop Van Persie from doing his best, score goals week in week out. The Dutch man is currently the leading goal-scorer in the Premier League with 16 goals.
Roberto Mancini was furious with Man City chiefs after seeing his top target joining United and said, "he has changed the situation. He is totally different from our other strikers."
Mancini is right. Van Persie is certainly different from other strikers in the Premier League. When the statistics of the last 100 games played are compared, Van Persie has scored 73 goals, provided 29 assists and created more chances (216) than any other player in his position.
Not even United team-mate Wayne Rooney can match Van Persie's record. Rooney, 26, has scored 65 goals with 25 assists while Carlos Tevez netted 55 time providing 21 assists. Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Newcastle's Demba Ba are in fine form but at this rate the two strikers are nowhere close to Van Persie.
United have been punished for slack defending and have conceded first more than any other side in the league but they have also won the highest number of games from a losing position. Van Persie scored the crucial winner against Southampton, Liverpool, West Ham United, Reading and also helped United win the Manchester derby.
The Dutch ace is at the top of his game, at his peak, even if he is closer to 30. In case he maintains his current form, City would have to forget about retaining the title and Van Persie can finally dream of winning a trophy.
