Villagers beat,police arrest Assam Cong man for raping woman

Guwahati, Jan 3: Now, another shame story from Assam. A well-known Congress leader from Lower Assam was publicly beaten up by villagers for attempting to rape a woman. Media reports say the accused has been arrested by police.

Bikram Singh Brahma, a Congress leader from Chirang district of Assam has confessed to his crime.

Brahma, who is the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts' (BTAD's) Congress Co-ordination Committee President, reportedly tried to rape the woman in Salbari in Chirang around 2 am this morning.

As the woman, who is a mother of two children, raised an alarm, her husband called his neighbours. Angry villagers, mostly women thrashed him in public view. Later they informed the police.

The woman's husband lodged an FIR alleging that Congress leader Brahma raped his wife last night.

Based on the FIR filed by the woman's husband, the police in lower Assam's Chirang district today arrested Brahma, Chirang superintendent of police Kumar Sanjeev Krishna told PTI.

The accused politician Brahma was the Congress candidate from Sapaguri assembly constituency in Baksa district in the 2011 assembly election which he lost.
