Assailants ate flesh after killing tea garden owner & wife
Inspector general, law and order, SN Singh confirmed that two witnesses told them about the cannibalism that followed the killing. The owner, Mridul Kumar Bhattacharya and his wife Rita Bhattacharya, were killed by angry garden workers to avenge the arrest of two of their colleagues by the police on the basis of a complaint lodged by Bhattacharya, who had earlier served them with eviction notices.
Around 700-800 workers torched a couple of vehicles at the owner's bungalow before killing them and setting the residence on fire. The charred bodies of the duo were retrieved later. Singh said the accused were from MKB tea estate and from some other neighbouring tea gardens and would be arrested soon.
The police did not rule out possibility of Maoists's involvement in the gruesome murder for they have been strengthening their hold in teh state's tea belts of late.
