'Gangrape victim suffered significant brain injury'
New Delhi, Dec 28: The latest health update from the Singapore hospital where the 23-year-old rape victim has been undergoing treatment said that the latter had suffered significant brain injury and was battling for her life. The medical bulletin of Mount Elizabeth Hospital issued on Friday morning said the woman was in an extremely critical condition. It added that besides the cardiac arrest, she had infection in her lungs and abdomen and also a brain injury.
It was learnt from the bulletin that specialists were working tirelessly to stabilise the patient's condition. The High Commission of India has been helping the hospital and the victim's family besides ensuring that she gets the best possible treatment.
Hospital sources said that no surgery could be conducted on the patient for her physical condition was yet not fit. She has already undergone a number of surgeries in India.
Only two medical experts from India were there at the Singapore hospital. The rest had returned.
Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said on Friday that no celebration would be held to mark the party's 127th anniversary. She said that her thoughts were with the victim and demanded that the criminals be punished at the earliest.
The young woman, a paramedical student, was brutally raped and assaulted by a number of men inside a moving bus in south Delhi on the night of Dec 16.
