Gangrape victim commits suicide; now, Patiala police slammed
The victim was raped by two men with the connivance of one woman on the night of Diwali which was celebrated on Nov 13. The two accused allegedly had threatened the victim and her family members not to approach the police.
Initially, they were scared but later decided to lodge a police complaint. They were shocked when police refused to file any sexual assault case, rather the cops had reportedly humiliated the victim by asking embarrassing questions every time she visited the police station to find about follow-up action on her complaint.
Victim's sister on Thursday, Dec 27 was quoted as saying, "The police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them."
Family members of the victim also claimed that she consumed poison as she was embarrassed and humiliated repetitively by the police who did not register rape case for over a month.
The news over gangrape victim's suicide in Patiala may ignite protests across the country.
New Delhi is facing continuous protest since a 23-year-old paramedical student was sexually assaulted in a moving bus.
Delhiites have not let the protest die down, rather protesters had hit the streets with renewed vigour on Thursday, Dec 27. The young protesters demanded safety of women.
The 23-year-old victim has been shifted to Singapore. She is under treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She underwent three surgeries at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where she remained on ventilator support during most part of the treatment. Doctors had removed major part of her gangrenous small intestine.
