Santa must be unhappy
Bangalore, Dec 24: There is a tinge of sadness in the air. This Christmas and holiday season, Indians are not celebrating but protesting on the streets across the country to ensure safety of women. The mass protests have been triggered by the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in New Delhi. The victim is fighting for her life at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.

It looks like even Santa Claus, the grand-old man who brings loads of goodies and gifts for children, must be mourning the sad situation of women in the country.

"Women cannot move freely in this country. Their safety is under threat. Protests are on but government is yet to address the problem," said Gauri Sharma, mother of a teenager student, who participated in protests in India Gate on Sunday, Dec 23.

Echoing Gauri, Subhash Kapoor, father of two college-going daughters said that not only Delhi, the whole of India is fast turning unsafe for women.

"I want India to be safe for all women, for my daughters, so that they can lead normal lives," said Kapoor, who works in a bank in Bangalore.

The last minute preparation to mark Christmas is on across India. Churches across the country have been decorated in festive colours and prayers are going on in full-swing for last 10 days. Local churches were in full force dispensing resources for the less fortunate in the community the weekend before Christmas.
