New Delhi, Dec 24: Netizens who are very upset over the government's callous reaction to the Delhi gang-rape today hit out at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. It was ironically the PM's own words "Theek hai?" at the end of his belated address to the nation that led to the online venting of rage.

Within two hours of the televised faux pas, #theekHai became a trending topic on Twitter. Prakash Sharma (@Prakash_Sharma) summed up the mood of most Indians when he said: "No Mr Prime Minister it is no longer#TheekHai. We are done with this status quo, chalta hai attitude."

Journalist Rahul Kanwal (@rahulkanwal) pointed out that "If sab #TheekHai, there'd be no reason for you to speak @PMOIndia. Wish words seemed as if they came from the heart & not from sheet of paper."

Manmohan Singh

Ramesh Srivats (@rameshsrivats) was more sarcastic. "#TheekHai Is Manmohan Singh just a piece of furniture? Maybe, but he is of good quality. Teak Hai," he noted.

"Sorry, but PM's speech was without feeling, wooden and totally unequal to the situation. The ‘theek hai' at the end revealed it as theatre!" CNN-IBN's Sagarika Ghose (@sagarikaghose) tweeted.

Actor Anupam Kher quipped that the manner in which the prime minister asked his staff or the TV crew whether everthing was alright "was d most Candid & Natural expression I have EVER seen from him.:)"

The PM's statement that he was the "father of three daughters" also did not cut much ice with the web users. "The Selfish PM says I have 03 daughters #shame ....I thought he wud say all the daughters in this country are mine #TheekHaiI," was how Kalyani Oswal (@K_Oswal) responded to Singh's comment.

Apart from #theekhai, the other hashtags which proved to be popular today were #meekhai and #bheekhai. These trending phrases indicate the nationwide outrage.

The angst stems from the government's abject failure to read the public mood. People are fed up of mere assurances, they want concrete action without further delay. Will the rulers recognise the signs and take corrective steps? That is the million dollar question.
