New Delhi, Dec 22: Opposition BJP has expressed its anger and demanded action against Congress party secretary and MP Sanjay Nirupam for his "indecent and derogatory" remarks against BJP women's wing chief Smriti Irani.

Both BJP and Congress condemned Nirupam's sexist remarks against Irani on a Television show. During a TV debate on Gujarat Assembly Elections 2012 on Thursday, Dec 20, Nirupam had reportedly told the actor-turned-politician, "Till some time ago you were dancing on TV screens and now you have become a psephologist."

Reacting angrily to it, the BJP has demanded an apology from the Congress and has asked Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi to take action against Nirupam. Irani slapped a legal notice on Nirupam for indulging in "gross defamation". "The kind of language and choice of words by Nirupam in a news channel debate against Irani, who is our mahila morcha chief and MP as well as an established TV actor, is most unfortunate. He crossed all limits of decency and decorum," BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Even Nirupam's comments were unwelcomed by Congress party.

Reacting to the remarks by the party MP, Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury said, "This is very regrettable. To say such a thing is unfortunate. It is this mindset which we have to fight."

Prasad said, "Nirupam has made anti-women comments and BJP strongly condemns it. We expect Sonia Gandhi to take action against him and apologise herself."
