New Delhi, Dec 12: Vice President Hamid Ansari daily disappears before noon from the Rajya Sabha of which he is the chairman, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati said today. During the Question Hour in the Upper House, she launched a scathing attack on Ansari for not being present at the time when MPs from some parties disrupt the proceedings.
Mayawati began her tirade against Ansari by saying, "I am not ready to listen to anything. We have seen in the last few days that every day the House is not allowed to function after 12 pm. It is your responsibility to ensure that the House functions. Who will ensure that it functions?"
Though Ansari urged the BSP chief to allow the other MPs to pose their questions, she did not calm down and continued to hit out at the Chair. "You are not seen here after 12 pm... What kind of House is this? You have to decide what has to be done for this," Mayawati said.
Ansari stressed that as a senior member of the house she should allow it to function. "It is Question Hour. Please take your seat," he urged repeatedly.
However, Mayawati was in no mood to listen to the Chairman's request. As she stormed into the well of the House, BSP members followed her lead. With the situation worsening, Ansari adjourned the Rajya Sabha till noon.
When the House reassembled, MPs loyal to Mayawati again created a furore. They shouted slogans against the government and alleged that it was not serious about passing a bill pertaining to reservation in promotion for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes in government jobs.
Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily had told newspersons yesterday that the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs will soon take a decision on the issue.
As the BSP members refused to relent on their demand for the quota bill to be passed without delay, Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien adjourned the House. The situation was no different post the nearly 30-minute adjournment and hence, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day.
