Vadodara, Dec 12: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern for the aam-aadmi (common man) of the state after sending a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding Sir Creek Controversy.

Raising the age-long controversial issue, the CM on Wednesday, Dec 12 wrote a letter addressing the PM and said that the central government should not even consider handing over Sir creek to Pakistan.

Mr Modi believes that handing over Sir Creek to Pakistan would severely impact the security of Gujarat. The CM of the state also urged the PM to postpone the date (Dec 15, 2012) when the government is expected to make its final decision on Sir Creek.

In his letter to Manmohan Singh, Mr Modi said, "the people of the state need to have a say in the matter because although the decision was one that fell within the realms of international diplomacy, Gujarat would be directly affected in the event that Sir Creek was handed over."

Mr Modi signed the letter as a citizen of the state and not as a CM as the he is bound to follow the rules of the election code. The state is going to hold its crucial assembly elections in two phases on Dec 13 and Dec 17. The results will be declared on Dec 20.

"...if Sir creek is given away, Gujarat will be completely exposed to Pakistan's borders," said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman while supporting Mr Modi's stand on the issue.

Sir Creek is a 96 km strip of water that is disputed between India and Pakistan in the Rann of Kutch marshlands. The creek, which opens up into the Arabian Sea, divides the Kutch region of the Indian state of Gujarat with the Sindh province of Pakistan.
