Chandigarh, Dec 9: Inderpal Singh, nephew of Gurdaspur Youth Akali Dal president Pramvir Singh Laadi, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly beating up a Punjab Home Guard constable for flagging down his car. The incident occurred on Friday, a couple of days after a policeman was shot dead by an Akali leader in Amritsar when the former tried to protect his daughter from being harassed by the latter and his colleagues.

As per the complaint lodged by constable Gurnam Singh, Inderpal "manhandled and tore his uniform" after the constable asked him to show the papers of his vehicle following a traffic violation. The vehicle of the accused was reportedly plying on the wrong side of the road and also hit another vehicle.

Gurnam, who was on duty at the spot, asked the driver to show the vehicle's papers at which he was allegedly manhandled by both Inderpal and his driver. It was also alleged that the accused reminded Gurnam about the murder of the slain Amritsar assistant sub-inspector.

Gurdaspur police said on Sunday that the incident was a serious case of assault on an on-duty public servant and said Inderpal had been held. He was produced before a local court and had been sent to judicial custody.

Inderpal is the prime witness in the Gurdaspur murder case of Jaspal Singh. Damdami Taksal member Lakhwinder Singh and Jaspal's father Gurcharanjit Singh had said on Sunday that a strong case had been registered against Inderpal for he was the witness in the murder case.

Inderpal's uncle Paramvir Singh distanced himself from the case, saying he did not have a good relation with Inderpal.
