The tragedy comes days after the highest court of the land had advised the states to show no tolerance to eve-teasing and had also recommended deployment of police at important locations.
But the Amritsar's residents are asking if this is the fate of a police official, will the common man be safe?
Assistant sub-inspector Ravinderpal Singh was shot dead from point blank range in the holy city of Amritsar following an argument with a group of men led by a member of ruling Akali Dal party. Ravinderpal had reached the spot after being informed by his daughter, a bank employee, that she was chased and teased by these youths. This was a natural act of a father trying to protect his daughter. But what followed is a blot on Amritsar and the spirit of Punjab.
The key accused has been identified as Shiromani Akali Dal district urban secretary Ranbir Singh Rana.
Some reports said that the police official along with his daughter went to Rana's house to warn him. But the politician allegedly shot him in the legs and again in the chest. The official was then taken to the hospital.
Rana is so brazen that he even shot at the police party which had gone to arrest him. He was picked up from Rajoke village of Tarn Taran district.
Locals say that the police official was murdered on the main road, metres away from the Chheharta police station and despite alarm raised by the public, the police station did not respond.
And what is the response of Akali Dal, whose public face is Sukhbir Badal's wife Harsimrat Kaur? The party has announced suspension of killer Rana.
