Norway child row: Indian couple convicted by Oslo court

New Delhi, Dec 4: An Indian couple in Norway on Tuesday was convicted by an Oslo court in relation to an alleged child abuse case. The father, Chandrasekhar Vallabhaneni was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment while his wife Anupama was sent to jail for 15 months.

Chandrasekhar, a software engineer, and his wife were arrested for allegedly ill-treating their seven-year-old son Sai Sriram.

The court had charged the couple with "gross or repeated maltreatment" of their children by means of "threats, violence or other wrong".

Chandrasekhar is an employee of software giant TCS, which had deputed him to Oslo one-and-half years ago to handle a project. He took his wife and two kids with him.

A nephew of Chandrasekhar said they will appeal in a higher court against the court verdict. He said his uncle and his family had gone to Norway as private citizens and respected its law. He said there was no intention to deliberately violate the norm and the Indian government should intervene into the matter.
