Narendra Modi power?Afzal Guru to be hanged before Guj poll?
After 26/11 terror attack gunman Ajmal Kasab's execution, Modi earlier on Tuesday, Nov 21 expressed his disappointment questioning, "What about Afzal Guru, who attacked Parliament, our temple of democracy, in 2001? That offence predates Kasab's heinous act by many years?"
A report, which was published by The Pioneer on Friday, Nov 23, says that activities inside Tihar Jail no-3 is an indication that the prison administration is readying itself to hang Guru before the Gujarat assembly elections.
According to the report, President Pranab Mukherjee sent Guru's mercy petition to Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde seeking to know his opinion.
The President reportedly asked the Home Minister to clarify whether he holds the views of his predecessor P Chidambaram regarding Guru's execution. The report said that Congress-led UPA may execute Guru before the assembly elections in order to continue the impact of Operation X, i.e. hanging of Kasab.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA government had delayed Guru's execution which was upheld by the Supreme Court. The report hinted that UPA's decision of hanging Guru before Gujarat election might be a trick to weaken Modi who is believed to have a stronghold on the state.
Gujarat elections will be held in two phase on Dec 13 and 17. Now, it will be interesting to see whether the Union Home Ministry will execute its reported plan of hanging Guru before the assembly poll or not.
