Tharoor, during an interview with CNN-IBN, claimed that many BJP ministers had "regretted the deplorable conduct" of the Gujarat CM. Reacting against Tharoor's statement, Janata Party chief on Sunday, Nov 4 said, "Shashi Tharoor must reveal the names of BJP ex-ministers who told him that they deplored Narendra Modi's 'Rs 50 crore girlfriend' remark. Either Tharoor should have treated it as confidential or if he has to broadcast it then he must reveal the names."
Tharoor, who has been inducted in UPA cabinet after a gap of two years, stated, "a very large number of BJP people, including some former ministers" reached out to him saying "they regretted the deplorable conduct of one of their own."
Criticism and counter criticism began when Modi, slamming UPA government's decision of inducting Tharoor in the cabinet, said, "Wah kya girlfriend hai. Apne kabhi dekha hai 50 crore ka girlfriend (What a girlfriend. Have you ever seen a 50-crore-girl friend)?"
Irked by Modi's statement, Tharoor replied while tweeting, "@narendramodi My wife is worth a lot more than your imaginary 50 crores. She is priceless. But you need2be able2love some1 2understand that."
Soon many other politicians such as BJP's Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Congress' Digvijay Singh joined the bandwagon. While Naqvi mocked Tharoor prposing Congress to create a special "Love Affair Ministry" for Tharoor.
Later Digvijay slammed Modi over his marital status asking, "Why is Modi silent about his wife's name? If you can visit YouTube and search Narendra Modi's wife, you will find the name Yashoda Ben as his wife."
