Cyclone Nilam hits Tamil Nadu, Andhra; rocks Chennai

Chennai, Oct 31: As it was expected, Cyclone Nilam finally hit the coastal region in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast north of Chennai on Wednesday evening around 4:45 PM. Met department informed that wind speed at the time of landfall was around 100 km per hour.

Electricity and mobile connections were disrupted in the affected areas including Chennai. People from low-lying areas were evacuated following the instruction by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

The CM also asked authorities to shift these people to relief centres and also ordered officials to ensure adequate stock of food, water, milk and essential supplies for these people.

Police officials arrested people who dared to come out from their respective houses and tried to take pictures of the scenery.

Schools and colleges will also remain close on Thursday, Nov 1. Police issued a statement at 5 pm requesting people to remain indoor for next five hours.

According to sources, the cyclone would take around one or two hours to cross the coast.
