Violence Against Women
Bangalore, Oct 23: Bangalore police have made a headway in connection with the gangrape of three female bartenders on Thursday, October 18. Police said nine suspects had been arrested on Tuesday.

A police complaint has been filed about the incident."The incident occurred on Thursday night on the outskirts of Bangalore between midnight and 3 am. This comes close on the heels of another rape incident which happened just few days back. A student of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore was allegedly gangraped by eight men inside the adjacent Jnanbharathi campus of Bangalore University. The second-year student, staying in the university hostel, in her police complaint said the incident took place when she had gone out with her boyfriend, who works with an IT firm.

The Bangalore police arrested a total of seven men in connection with the case on Sunday.

The recently released data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) also suggests the rising rape incidents in the city. The city ranks next only to New Delhi in the crime against women statistics.

The latest NCRB report for 2011 shows that Bangalore has witnessed 1,890 instances of crime against women. This accounts for 5.6% of such crime in the country. The corresponding numbers for New Delhi stood at 4,489 cases and 13.3%. Snapping at Bangalore's heels is Hyderabad: 1,860 cases and 5.5%.

The number of crime cases against women in the city in 2010 was 1,590 and constituted 6.5% of the national number.

Haryana is also in news for all the wrong reasons. There has been a spate of rape incidents in Haryana recently - as many as 19 in a month.
