Cauvery issue: Protest
Mandya (Karnataka), Oct 12: Farmers on Oct 11 blocked roads and railway tracks at Gejjalagere here opposing any release of water to Tamil Nadu in the wake of Cauvery Monitoring Committee deciding that the neighbouring state would get 8.85 tmc of water over the next fortnight.

Reacting to the CMC order, president of the Cauvery Hitarakshana Samiti (committee spearheading the stir) G Madegowda, said, "The committee has no right to give any direction. We will not allow the government to release water at any cost."

Meanwhile, in the wake of renewed protests at Mandya, hotbed of the Cauvery stir, authorities promulgated prohibitory orders from Oct 11 till Oct 12.

At its meeting in Delhi on Oct 11, the CMC decided that Tamil Nadu would get 8.85 tmc of water over the next fortnight Karnataka, however, said it would not accept the award.

The "award" of the committee is based on the findings of a central team that visited Karnataka and Tamil Nadu last week. Sources said the award is clear that Tamil Nadu "shall receive" 8.85 thousand million cubic feet (tmc) of water between Oct 16 and Oct 31.
