Juvenile Home Shame: Caretakers turn abusers at Kottayam

Kottayam, Oct 11: All is not well with children of Thiruvanjoor Juvenile Home in Kottayam, Kerala. The inmates, mostly minors of the juvenile home, were reportedly abused sexually and physically by the caretakers. Around 65 children live in the home.

The incidents of abuse and torture of the inmates have shocked everyone in the state. Along with the caretakers, few seniors boys in the juvenile home were also abusing the minors.

Finally, few kids have come forward and reported cases of abuse.

"They beat us with large sticks. At night, the wardens and senior boys would remove our clothes and abuse us. The wardens would make the senior boys beat us up. They also abused us. If we resisted they would threaten to file police cases against us," said one of the inmates.

After cases of abuse were reported, Home Minister of Kerala Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan had promised a thorough probe. Radhakrishnan said, "We will look into the matter."

After the shocking incident, Kerala government has decided to probe all other juvenile centres in the state.

The juvenile home has been set up under the Social Welfare Department of the state government.
