Cauvery water: K'taka dares all again, says no to Tamil Nadu
Keeping its words and decision unchanged, Karnataka informed Monitoring Committee that it can not release water to its neighbouring state as the move will affect its farmers and people. The panel on Thursday asked Karnataka to release water from Oct 16 to Oct 31.
Earlier, Jayalalithaa-led Tamil Nadu government urged central government to bring contempt case against Karnataka for refusing to abide by the Supreme Court order which had asked it to supply 9,000 cusecs of water to the State from Cauvery basis. Here it can be mentioned that Cusec is a measure of flow rate and is informal shorthand for cubic feet per second (28.317 litres per second).
Karnataka earlier was asked to release water to Tamil Nadu till Oct 15. The state had followed the order initially but later snubbed the apex court's direction and stopped water supply from Oct 9.
