The tragedy struck at 8.10 am in Zhenhe village in Yiliang County of the province when the students of the Shangba Primary School were getting ready for their classes scheduled to start at 9 am, the state media said. A local county government official and sources in the local education bureau confirmed the incident. It was also learnt that one villager went missing after the incident.
The victims were preparing for the classes during the ongoing National Day holiday to make up for the lost classes due to earthquakes in early September, which had damaged the school building.
Over 30 students were forced to attend classes at the nearby Tiantou Primary School, the Xinhua said. The Yiliang County was rocked by multiple quakes on Sept 7, which resulted in the death of 81 people. About 800 people were injured.
