Two dead, many feared trapped in Chennai building collapse
Reports say two persons have died and several others are believed to have been trapped under the debris in the incident.
Rescue officials said the two-storey building at Sunguvar Street in Triplicane, which also housed a printing press, collapsed with a loud noise around 7.15 a.m.
Sources in the state government said that rescue teams, consisting of both police and fire fighting personnel had been pressed into service to help the victims.
Four persons are believed to have been trapped inside the building and efforts were on to rescue them, informed an official. Locals have also joined the rescue operations to help the rescue teams.
"There could be more people trapped under the debris. More details of the incident are awaited," said an official.
Expressing grief over the incident a resident of the building who survived the tragedy said that his family had been rendered homeless.
"I am thankful that my family members are safe. It is sad that people are still trapped inside the debris. Hope all of them survive. But the incident has left us homeless," lamented the resident.
