The protesters marched on the Chowringee Road in the heart of the city towards the American Centre demanding a ban on the film and official apology from the US authorities. They also sought action against the film titled Innocence of Muslims which allegedly insulted Prophet Mohammed. The protesters also pushed police barricades which were used to cordon off the area to stop the mob.
The anti-Islam film protest in Kolkata was the third such protest in India following that in Jammu and Kashmir and Chennai. Besides India, anti-US protests over the controversial film broke out in various countries in North Africa, West Asia and South-east Asia. In Libya, the protest had turned so violent that it led to the death of the US Ambassador to that country, Chris Stevens, earlier this month.
