Popular Malayalam film actor Thilakan passes away


Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 24: Popular Malayalam film actor Thilakan passed away early Monday morning at around 3:45 am. He breathed his last in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He had been hospitalised for pneumonia and cardiac problems since close to a month. Aged 74, this actor par excellence was known for his unconventional portrayal of character roles and bold stance on various social issues.

Thilakan had acted in more than 200 films in a career spanning more than 50 years. Born as Surendranath Thilakan on Jul 15, 1938, his first foray into acting was in theatres where he was a name to reckon with his brilliant ability to tackle complex characters. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 for his contribution to arts.

Thilakan had reportedly collapsed during a film shoot and was hospitalised on Aug 23 following a heart attack. He was in a critical condition ever since.

Thilakan's demise is sure to leave a vacuum in the Malayalam film industry.
