Metro bridge collapses in Mumbai, many feared trapped
Rescue operation is underway. According to sources, the bridge might have collapsed due to heavy rains in the city. Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rain falls for the last 24 hours.
Fire brigade officials reached the place soon after receiving the news of the mishap around 4:50 pm. At least six to seven people have been rescued and they were rushed to a near by hospital.
A 50 metre slab of the bridge collapsed near the Hotel Leela at the north western suburb of Andheri.
Excavators were used to break the slabs to rescue the entrapped people. After following the records of the construction work at the metro bridge between the suburbs of Andheri and Ghatkopar at Marole area, it has been found that this was not the first time that such a mishap took place.
A part of a 400-tonne crane, which was used during the metro line construction in Apr 2012, veered off the truck carrier and crashed on a portion of the Sarvodaya Hospital in Ghatkopar.
