At least two killed in New Jersey shootout, gunman shot dead

New Jersy: At least two people were reportedly killed in a shooting at a mall in Old Bridge, New Jersey, on early Friday morning.

It was reported that police arrived at the spot and responded to shots fired inside the Pathmark, where employees were stocking shelves, at 4 am. The gunman was also killed in the shootout, it is learnt. A heavy police presence was seen outside the supermarket after the tragedy. SWAT team personnel took command positions in the parking place of a nearby restaurant.

The latest shootout was the seventh in the US this year and fourth in over a month. A few days ago, a 'disgruntled' designer killed a former co-worker and opened fire on the sidewalks before he was gunned down by the police. The man was sacked from an apparel company, it was known.

On August 5, a man called Michael Wade Page opened fire in a gurudwara in Wisconsin, killing six members of the Sikh community besides seriously injuring others. On July 20, 12 people were killed in a shooting massacre at a theatre during the screening of the batman film 'The Dark Knight Rises' in Colorado.

These incidents have given rise to a debate on the USA's gun laws. President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney were criticised for evading the issue of gun laws.
